Oral interpretation has started the season strong. The team had multiple students place for their first meet at LDHS. The oral interpretation team then went to Sturgis where they achieved 10 medals. Mrs. Courtney Pierce is the head coach for oral interpretation; Mrs. Michaela Besco is the assistant coach; and Junior Briar R. is the president of the team. When Briar talked about her favorite meet, she said, “Definitely the meet at Sturgis. We brought home a lot of medals that day.” Briar also stated, “I’m proud that I took first place at the meet in Sturgis.” Their most recent meet was in Pierre where they brought back multiple medals as a team.
When asked how oral interpretation affects her today, Briar responded “Oral interp. has taught me a lot about myself and has inspired me to write poetry. I’ve also become a really good public speaker.” Briar’s goal for this season is to place at every meet she attends. Pierce relayed her proudest moment thus far as a coach, she stated, “Personally, I’m most proud of watching my two children win a medal in their category at each meet we’ve been to. Professionally, I’m most proud of how each team member takes the judges’ notes or suggestions and sees where they can make adjustments and them improves their performances.” When asked about her season goals, Pierce replied, “Mrs. Besco and I are hoping to keep growing the program. This year we have 12 students (the most we’ve ever had). We’re also hoping to have a really cool fundraising opportunity at the Homestake Opera House where we get to showcase our talents to the community.”
Oral interpretations’ next meet is in Custer on Nov. 4, where they are hoping to bring back more medals.
