We are so proud of our school-based mental health providers! Our school counselor, Mrs. Bender, was named the Outstanding Professional School Counselor of the Year. Mrs. Bender will go on to represent South Dakota at the American School Counselor Association’s National School Counselor of the Year gala in Washington, DC later this year. Our school psychologist, Mrs. McPherson, received the Special Contributions Award for making a contribution of unusual significance that directly affects school counselors, students, and their schools. Both were honored to be recipients of these statewide South Dakota School Counselor Association awards.

Mr. Tom Paulsen is passing this week’s Lead-Deadwood Elementary Shining Light on to Mrs. Amy Vande Velde. “There are a lot of great teachers out there, but this is one of the most dedicated ones I have ever worked with. She’s a very positive person and her enthusiasm for learning rubs off on her students. I have worked with her for about as many years as I have been here. She’s a wonderful teacher and a wonderful friend to many. Amy Vande Velde!”

The Lead-Deadwood Elementary Shining Light is being passed to Mr. Josh Morovits from Mr. Don Alesi. “I can sum up the reason why the Shining Light goes to this person. I was talking to a student who was having a rough week and I asked him what he needed to get to the fifth grade. He said, ‘I don’t want to go to the fifth grade unless Mr. Morovits will be my teacher.’ I really couldn’t argue with this reasoning. I feel the same way.”
